Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) is the only higher education institution (HEI) in the midlands of Ireland. Established in 1970 as Athlone Regional Technical College, it has expanded in size, scope, and influence over the period. At present AIT offers more than 100 full-time programmes from two-year sub-degree courses through to PhD, across the following schools and departments:

  • Business School
  • School of Engineering
  • School of Science
  • Department of Lifelong Learning

With a focus on real-world engagement, AIT’s approach to teaching and learning gives students the knowledge and skills sought by employers. This professional orientation is embedded across all faculties, through placements, project work and an applied research focus.

Over 6,000 students call AIT home, with over 53 nationalities represented on campus. China remains the largest source of international students. Recent agreements signed with the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have had an impact on the number of students coming from the Middle East.

In the years since 2000, AIT has secured more than €23 million in research funding obtained from a broad range of national and international funding agencies. The Institute has also benefited from €115 million investment since 2000. This has seen the following new facilities added to the institute's infrastructure: Engineering and Informatics Building, Postgraduate Research Hub, Midlands Innovation and Research Centre, Nursing and Health Science Building, Hospitality, Tourism & Leisure Studies Building, as well as numerous other improvements and additions to the facilities.

Approaching its fortieth anniversary, AIT is a landmark in the Midlands of Ireland, renowned for the quality of its academic programmes and the calibre of its graduates.
